APS Funds

Animal Research Outreach


A fund supporting animal research outreach by the Office of Science Policy. Donations to this fund will make it possible to send free copies of the APS brochure Animal Research: Finding Cures, Saving Lives to those engaged in educating the public about the value of animal research.


APS Endowment Fund


The APS Endowment Fund was established to provide funding for awards for the next generation of physiologists and to help advance the discipline of physiology. Current programs include the Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowships, Porter Physiology Development Fellowships, the Career Enhancement Awards, and the Daggs and Reynolds Awards. The Ray G. Daggs award is presented to a physiologist who is judged to have provided distinguished long-term service to the science of physiology and, in particular, to the American Physiological Society. The Orr E. Reynolds award is presented for the best historical article submitted by a member of the Society.


Arthur C. Guyton Fund


A fund supporting the Arthur C. Guyton Award for Excellence in Integrative Physiology and initiated through a contribution from Charles Rife. The award is given annually to an individual demonstrating outstanding promise based on his/her research program in feedback control systems, quantitative modeling, and integrative physiology.


Carlos Romero Memorial Fund


A fund established to honor the memory of Juan Carlos Romero, distinguished APS member and to be used to support the Juan Carlos Romero Young Investigator Award for presentation at the Experimental Biology meeting


Caroline tum Suden Fund


The tum Suden Fund supports the Caroline tum Suden/Frances A. Hellebrandt Professional Opportunity Awards that provide funds to junior physiologists to attend and participate in the annual Experimental Biology meeting.


Dale J. Benos Memorial Fund


A fund established to honor the memory of Dale J. Benos, distinguished member and former APS President. Proceeds of the fund will be used to recognize excellence in student research in the physiological sciences.


David Bruce Award Fund


A fund established to recognize excellence in undergraduate research. Proceeds of the fund will be used to fund  David S. Bruce Awardees at the Experimental Biology meeting.


Education Program

Fleur L Strand Travel Award Fund


The Fleur L Strand Award was established to recognize the achievements of a young physiologist, (graduate student or postdoctoral), enabling the recipient to attend the APS annual meeting at the Experimental Biology meeting.


Folk Senior Physiologist Fund


A fund supporting the Senior Physiologist Award Program was established in honor of G. Edgar Folk, Jr.  The award is given annually to provide an opportunity for senior Society members to remain active in their careers, pursue areas of physiological interest, and participate in Society activities.


Gabor Kaley Memorial Fund

Giles F. Filley Fund


A fund supporting the Giles F. Filley Memorial Award. The award is given annually to an investigator demonstrating excellence in respiratory physiology and medicine.


IUPS Fund


A fund established to support a travel award program to enable physiologists to attend meetings of the International Union of Physiological Sciences.


John F. Perkins Fund


A fund supporting the John F. Perkins, Jr. Memorial Award promoting cultural and scientific benefits associated with the international aspects of physiology.


Lazaro J. Mandel Fund


A fund supporting the Lazaro J. Mandel Young Investigator Award. The award is given annually to an individual demonstrating outstanding promise based on his/her research program in epithelial or renal physiology.


Minority Travel Fellowship Fund


This program is designed to encourage highly qualified individuals from groups traditionally underrepresented in science to pursue professional careers in physiological/biomedical sciences by attending and presenting their work at APS meetings and conferences.


Porter Minority Development Fund


This award is designed to support the training of talented students entering careers in physiology by providing predoctoral fellowships for underrepresented students (African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Native Alaskans, and Native Pacific Islanders).


Shih-Chun Wang Fund


A fund supporting the Shih-Chun Wang Young Investigator Award to an individual demonstrating outstanding promise based on his/her research program in the physiological sciences.


Steven M. Horvath Memorial Fund


A fund established to honor the memory of Steven M. Horvath, distinguished APS member. Proceeds of the fund will be used to provide support for the The Steven M. Horvath Professional Opportunity Awards to promote the advancement of underrepresented minority graduate.

Cardiovascular Section Fund


Contributions to the Cardiovascular Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, special lecturers, and the annual Section Banquet held during Experimental Biology.


Cell & Molecular Section Fund


Contributions to the CAMP Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, The Robert Gunn Memorial Award, special lecturers, and the annual Section Banquet held during Experimental Biology.


CNS Section Fund


Contributions to the CNS Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, special lecturers, and the annual Section Social held during Experimental Biology.


Comparative & Evolutionary Section Fund


Contributions to the CEP Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, the annual Scholander Award, special lecturers, and the annual Section Social held during Experimental Biology.


Endocrinology & Metabolism Section Fund


Contributions to the Endocrinology & Metabolism Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, special lecturers, and the annual Section Social held during Experimental Biology.


Environmental and Exercise Physiology Section Fund


Contributions to the EEP Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, special lecturers, and the annual Section Social held during Experimental Biology.


Gastro & Liver Physio Section Fund


Contributions to the GIL Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, special lecturers, and the annual Section Social held during Experimental Biology.


Neural Control Section Fund


Contributions to the NCAR Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, special lecturers, and the annual Section Social held during Experimental Biology.


Renal Section Fund


Contributions to the Renal Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, special lecturers, and the annual Section Social held during Experimental Biology.


Respiration Section Fund


Contributions to the Respiration Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, special lecturers, and the annual Section Social held during Experimental Biology.


Respiration Section Trainee Highlights


A fund established by the Society’s Respiration Section to support a Trainee Highlights Session, along with several travel awards, to be presented at the Society’s annual meeting.  The Session will be programmed and chaired by members of the Trainee Subcommittee of the Respiration Section. The APS has agreed to match up to $25,000 in contributed funds.  The goal is to raise an endowment totaling $50,000, comprised of $25,000 raised through individual contributions and the matching contribution of $25,000 from the Society.


Teaching of Physiology Section Fund


Contributions to the Teaching of Physiology Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, special lecturers, and the annual Section Social held during Experimental Biology.


Van Harreveld Fund


A fund, established by the Central Nervous System Section of the Society to recognize outstanding research in neuroscience by a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow.


Virendra B. Mahesh Fund


A fund established by Virendra B. Mahesh in conjunction with the Society’s Section of Endocrinology and Metabolism, to support a distinguished lectureship or award to be presented at the Society’s annual meeting. The award is presented to an individual demonstrating outstanding promise in the area of endocrinology based on his/her abstract submitted to the Experimental Biology meeting.


Water and Electrolyte Homeostasis Section Fund


Contributions to the WEH Section are used to support section activities, such as travel awards to Experimental Biology, special lecturers, and the annual Section Social held during Experimental Biology.
